Explore castles, baroque cities and attend the once-in-a-decade production of The Passion Play when you travel with The Denver Center for the Performing Arts to Germany. Enjoy expert insight from our tour guides, former Brown Palace Hotel general manager Peter Aeby and his wife Margrit. Choose to extend your stay by traveling onto Switzerland. The itinerary follows (subject to change at anytime):

  • May 19 — Arrive on your own to Frankfurt.
  • May 20 — Travel on your own to the InterContinental Hotel and enjoy a day exploring Frankfurt’s sites: St Paul’s Church, the Römer and Frankfurt Cathedral among others. Then gather for a welcome dinner.
  • May 21 — Take a deluxe coach to Wurzburg, one of the country’s loveliest baroque cities and producer of Franconian wine. There you will tour the Residence Palace, dubbed by Napoleon as the “nicest parsonage in Europe”; the Dom of St. Kilian, Germany’s fourth-largest Romanesque cathedral dedicated to Irish missionary St. Kilian, dates to 1045; and the city’s oldest and most noticeable landmark, Marienburg Fortress. We will continue onto the cobblestone streets in Bavaria’s picturesque town, Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Journey into medieval life when you join the famous “Night Watchman” for a walk to the elaborate Kaethe Wohlfart Christmas store.
  • May 22 — Start your day with a walking tour to Rothenburg’s Market Square filled with German-made products. The tour concludes at Jakobskirche (Church of St. Jakob), famous for its two altars, one of which was created by 15th-century woodcarver Tilman Riemenschneider. Journey as a group to Nuremberg and at the Hotel Maritim in the old part of the city that offers Gothic churches, patrician homes and romantic spots.
  • May 23 — Explore the towering Nuremberg castles; the Albrecht Durer House, featuring the quarters of German’s greatest Renaissance artist (1471-1528), and the Lorenzer Old City. Then visit Zeppelin Stadium and Museum, site of Nazi rallies under Hitler followed by an exploration of caves beneath the city where art treasures were hidden during WWII bombing raids.
  • May 24 — Journey along the Romantic Road, a trade route dating to The Middle Ages that retains its medieval character and leads to Augsburg. There, tour of Town Hall; dating from 1620, many consider it to be the most significant secular Renaissance building north of the Alps. Next, visit the Fuggerei, founded in 1516, which is a walled enclave that housed Augsburg’s needy citizens and remains the world’s oldest social housing project. Continue on to Fussen and stay at the Hotel Muller, located near the Austrian border between the royal castles of Bavaria.
  • May 25 —Visit the city’s two main castles: Neuschwanstein, the most famous of three royal palaces built for Bavaria’s King Louis II, and Hohenschwangnau, acquired by Prince Maximilian in 1832 to create a truly “fairy tale castle” with decorative towers and turrets, oriels, portals, balconies and pillars. If available, we will visit the Opera House for a performance of Ludwig.
  • May 26 — Travel to Garmisch-Partenkirchen where we will spend two nights for our attendance at The Passion Play in nearby Oberammergau.
  • May 27 —Attend the once-in-a-decade performance of The Passion Play. A ritual that began in 1633 during the Thirty Years War following a plague epidemic, the Oberammergauers vowed to perform the "play of the suffering, death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years. Preserved throughout the centuries, it was last performed in 2000 with singular continuity for the 40th time. In 2010, more than 2,000 of the city’s actors, singers, instrumentalists and stage technicians will bring these events to the stage in a spectacular production.
  • May 28 & 29 — Depart for Zurich, Switzerland and two nights at the Hotel Ambassador.
  • May 30 — Tour Concludes; airport transfers on your own.
