The Bobby G Awards, named for Broadway touring pioneer Robert Garner, is both a local high school musical theatre celebration and a participant in the The Jimmy Awards: National High School Musical Theatre Awards held every spring in New York City.

PARTICIPATION
Musical productions performed by private and public high schools in Colorado are eligible to register. You'll receive detailed feedback on your musical production and could be nominated for the annual awards show. Participation is in high demand and only the first 40 schools to register can participate. Registration fee is $200 due at the time of registration.

THE CEREMONY
Modeled after the Tony Awards, the Bobby G ceremony includes performances from Outstanding Overall Production nominees and a medley featuring the nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Actor or Actress in a Leading Role. We also honor students and educators in the categories of performance, design, direction, choreography and technical production.

AFTER THE SHOW
The winners for Outstanding Performance by an Actor or Actress in a Leading Role will travel to New York to represent Colorado at The Jimmy Awards: National High School Musical Theatre Awards. Nominated schools will also receive discounted tickets to a select DCPA Broadway performance followed by a Q&A session with cast and crew members, as well as one personal master class session with a DCPA Education teaching artist.

APPLYING TO PARTICIPATE

HOW SCHOOLS ARE EVALUATED AND ADJUDICATED

  • Do we need to travel to have our show adjudicated?

  • When will we be contacted to reserve tickets for the adjudicators?

  • How many adjudicators do you send to each show?

  • How many tickets should we hold until we receive specific reservations?

  • Our shows sell out quickly. What should we do?

  • Where do we seat the adjudicators?

  • All or a portion of a reservation was not picked up by an adjudicator. What does this mean?

  • What if some of the adjudicators are unable to attend any performance?

  • How do the adjudicators evaluate the show?

NOMINATIONS AND FEEDBACK PROCESS

WHAT DOES AN ADJUDICATOR DO?:
Adjudicators attend performances of local high school musical theatre productions and complete thorough evaluation forms to offer praise and constructive criticism for the performances. The collected evaluations from of you and your fellow adjudicators will be used to determine the nominees for the awards ceremony.

ADJUDICATORS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND:
  • Adjudication training at the DCPA
  • High school musicals on the weekends during the course of the competition
    • The number of assignments will ultimately depend on the availability of the adjudicators, number of participating schools and their performance dates.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

    • Hold a degree in relevant fields (music, theatre, dance, etc.)
    • Have extensive experience in a related discipline on a professional or academic basis
    • Be a professional artist or educator with wide knowledge of musical theatre

COMPENSATION:
  • Adjudicators receive a stipend of $50 per adjudication
  • All participating schools provide complimentary tickets to their musicals for adjudicators and one guest
  • Tickets to the Bobby G Awards ceremony will be provided

The Randy Weeks Memorial Fund for The Bobby G Awards supports the advancement of musical theatre for Colorado high school students. Assets go in part to The Production Support Fund, which helps schools in need receive up to $500 to use for their musical production.

The fund was started in honor of the late DCPA President and Broadway Executive Director D. Randall “Randy” Weeks. His commitment to the DCPA and Colorado theatre was felt through the hundreds of Broadway shows he helped present, spearheading the opening of the Garner Galleria, and being one of the founding members of the Women’s Voices Fund. Recognizing the wealth of talent in Colorado, Randy spearheaded the creation of The Bobby G Awards in 2013, the Colorado regional awards for The National High School Musical Theatre Awards.

If you’d like to continue to support local schools long after awards season is over, consider a fully tax-deductible gift today. No matter how much you’re able to give, students across the state will be grateful to have an outlet to express themselves and discover their voices through theatre.

“DCPA has some fantastic educational programs for children and teens. My daughter Katie has enjoyed being a part of the DCPA for several years. The teachers do a great job of making the students feel like they are a part of something special, and I am pleased to give back to a program that gives so much.” — Michael Roche
