The Bobby G Awards, a year-long celebration of Colorado high-school theatre administered through the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, has released the list of 40 participating schools for the fourth annual awards to be presented on Thursday, May 26, at the Buell Theatre.
The record lineup represents 25 percent growth for the program since 2015. For the second time, Colorado high schools statewide are eligible for consideration. The 2016 roster includes high schools in Niwot, Steamboat Springs, Glenwood Springs and Cortez (located in the southwest corner of the state).
Between them, the 40 schools are taking on 29 musical titles in 2015-16, with Anything Goes being the most popular, with three productions. Other multiple productions include Beauty and the Beast, Hello Dolly, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Legally Blonde, Mary Poppins and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella.
Private and public high school musical theatre programs in Colorado were invited to have their shows adjudicated by professional theatre experts. Participating schools receive detailed feedback on their musical production and are considered for the annual awards show, which is modeled after the Tony Awards. The two sSudents named Outstanding Actor and Actress move on to the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City.
Last year, Durango High School’s production of Les Misérables was named Outstanding Musical. (Pictured above: Outstanding Actor Evatt Salinger, top, and Durango classmate Emma Buchanan, winner of Outstanding Actress for Les Misérables. Photo by John Moore.)
