On Sunday, the national news program CBS This Morning chronicled the August launch of the Pippin The Musical national tour extensively – first as it rehearsed in New York, and then as it opened in Denver. It covers the first planning meeting to opening night at the Buell Theatre. Check out the report by clicking the video above.
And below is a special video created by DCPA Video Producer David Lenk following the CBS This Morning crew following the Pippin team in Denver. Yes, we’re getting meta!
The Pippin report aired on Sunday morning to mark the closing of the Broadway production of Pippin on Jan. 4 after 709 performances. But the Denver-born tour will go on for years to come. “Pippin is going to play 37 cities, and it’s great that this is the first one,” said CBS This Morning producer Jay Kernis.
The Pippin creative team took the extraordinary step of dedicating the entire tour to DCPA President Randy Weeks, who died suddenly on Oct. 9. Dedicating an entire tour to any one person is believed to be an unprecedented honor in Broadway history.
“This has been the best tour-opening experience in my 27 years out on the road, and Randy is the reason,” said Pippin national press rep Anita Dloniak, citing the camaraderie and professionalism Weeks inspired in his staff. “And he throws the best parties,” she added.
