Su Teatro Cultural & Performing Arts Center’s Cultural Arts Education Institute announces El Teatro VolARTE’s production of It’s All Bueno, written by Sigrid Gilmer for Cornerstone Theatre Company and directed by Jose “Jozer” Guerrero. El Teatro VolARTE, Su Teatro’s youth theatre company, will take the audience on an adventure through one of the oldest barrios in Southern California from March 12-21, 2021. Although in-person attendance is restricted, all are welcome to tune into the four livestream virtual showings on: Friday, March 12 at 6:30 pm, Saturday, March 13 & 20 at 4:30, and Sunday March 21 at 1 pm.

It’s All Bueno follows the journey of a family that wants to get away from the community they grew up in, but can’t. A storytelling tamale vendor takes you through this community adventure featuring: big box stores, scary bus rides, chola picnics, and gangster clown piñata runners. Set in the hometown of Ritchie Valens, this story speaks to Chicanx communities everywhere. It reminds us that every community has its struggles, but that there’s also always good. As the vendor/narrator puts it: “You want a community you can be proud of? Feel safe in?¿Una comunidad donde pueden sentirse seguros? You wanna live in this life? You will need sunshine and shit. Flowers cost.” This joyfully irreverent family production takes a hard look at what upward mobility means in the U.S. Originally performed by the Pacoima community itself, this play speaks volumes to the power and importance of community.

Written by Sigrid Gilmer and directed by Jozer Guerrero, this play will be performed by Award Winning youth company El Teatro VolARTE. Made up of middle and highschool students from across the Denver metro area, El Teatro VolArte has received notable accolades in recent years. In 2018, the Mayor of Denver granted the group the Excellence in Arts & Culture Global Award, after they represented the Denver community at The Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland through The American High School Theater Festival.

It’s All Bueno, originally written for Cornerstone Theatre Company, opens at Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center on Friday, March 12 at 6:30pm. Other show times include: Saturday, March 13 & 20 at 4:30pm, and Sunday March 21 at 1pm. The performances will be livestreamed, tickets will be available at www.suteatro.org.
