June listings DCPASummertime is when Colorado’s mountain theatre companies come to life in Aspen, Creede, Grand Lake, Pagosa Springs and beyond, helping to make June the busiest month of the year for theatre openings, even as many metro companies go quiet until fall.

June also marks the return of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, the second-oldest celebration of the Bard in the country. The season opens June 3 with a gender-bending A Comedy of Errors and includes the world premiere of Equivocation, starring John Hutton.

There are also unusually large number of special events in June, each detailed at the bottom of these listings. They include one night only with drag legend Charles Busch (Tale of the Allergist’s Wife) on June 4 at  Lannies Clocktower Cabaret. (Look for our interview next week.)

And Toto Too, the only Colorado theatre company dedicated exclusively to women’s voices, presents its 6th annual play crawl along Tennyson street – 10, two-minute plays by local women playwrights presented environmentally in galleries and shops along six blocks of Tennyson Street – on June 15.

Denver native Martin Moran (The Tricky Part) has turned his second one-man play about surviving sexual abuse into a memoir. On June 20, Moran will return to Curious Theatre for a reading, performance and discussion about All the Rage: A Quest.

Another solo show of note is a new play that looks at the life of former Denver Post publisher Helen Bonfils. The Bonfils Girl is being staged in Denver starting June 2 by a new theatre company called Actasana.

Up in Greeley, multiple award-winning actor Megan Van De Hey will be joining Colorado’s oldest theatre company, The Little Theatre of the Rockies, for a production of Gypsy

And don’t forget: The Tony Awards, honoring the best in Broadway, will air at 7 p.m.

Sunday, June 12, on CBS-4. Here’s a look at our 2016 local Tony Award connections.

If you can believe, it here is the complete (updated!) list of the more than 70 theatregoing options you have at present around the Colorado theatre community.
