The DCPA’s signature “Seasons of Love” Wedding Showcase returns to the Seawell Grand Ballroom on Saturday, March 21, with a whole new mantra:
“All Kinds of Love.”
This popular annual showcase spotlights the hottest wedding trends of the year. But what makes it unique is that it creates four unique vignettes based on the four seasons of the year. Each seasonal display features its own curated cake company, florist, photography, wedding planner, wedding fashion and tabletop. DCPA Events Services has hand-selected local vendors to collaborate on each theme.
Visitors will be greeted by a champagne reception, live entertainment on multiple stages, unique food displays, Colorado spirits and giveaways.
“Seasons of Love” has become much more of an event than couples shopping for wedding inspiration. “It also is a great chance for our fellow Denver vendors to mix and mingle and see what everyone is up to,” said DCPA Director of Events Services Dawn Williams.
The showcase, which began in 2010, is no longer called a bridal event. That’s intentional because, moving forward, Williams says, “The Seawell Ballroom is for all couples. We as a state are saying yes to marriages of all kinds, and so are we.”
Since 2003, the Seawell Grand Ballroom has hosted 255 weddings and receptions. Later this year, Matthew D. Peters and Sean White (pictured below right) will become the first same-sex couple to marry there.
“We are honored and excited,” said Peters, an acclaimed local actor, director and choreographer. “The fight for marriage equality has been long and difficult for the LGBT community. It’s not over yet, but we are so thankful that marriage equality has been realized in Colorado.”
When Stacia Harris Shorts went searching for the perfect venue for her wedding last December, “my husband and I visited just about every wedding venue Denver had to offer,” she said. “The Seawell Grand Ballroom met and exceeded every single one of our expectations.”
For Peters and White, the Seawell Grand Ballroom was always the top choice. Peters won a 2014 True West Award for his direction of Swing! at the Town Hall Arts Center in Littleton. White is an accomplished cellist. “So we both have an affinity for the arts,” Peters said. “We live in downtown Denver, and I have worked a few gigs at the Seawell – so we were already in love with the venue. We love the sweeping mountain views.
“But then our friend introduced us to Dawn Williams. She spent a couple of hours with us talking about all our wedding dreams. After meeting with Dawn, all other venues we had looked at were forgotten — we knew we just had to have our wedding at the Seawell.”
Peters and White inadvertently found themselves the subject of viral media attention at the end of last year when they were the victims of vandalism at their downtown Denver apartment. Their clever response to whoever scrawled hateful graffiti onto their door inspired cheers from around the world for the couple’s ability to respond to hate with … funny. All the more reason they are thrilled to be setting a bit of Seawell Grand Ballroom history this coming November with their fun, theatre awards-show themed wedding.
“Something that was particularly important to Sean was that we not have a wedding ceremony until our marriage could be legally recognized as equal to heterosexual couples, and we are so excited that that day is finally here,” Peters said.
“We have waited a long time, and we cannot wait to see our names proudly displayed on the marquee above the entrance to the Seawell. We are stoked that ours will be the first of hopefully many same-sex marriages to be announced up there.”
