  • Harmony LivingstonHometown: Summertown, Tennessee
  • Home now: Lakewood
  • Training: BA in Theatre Performance and a minor in Dance from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville
  • What’s your handle? @harmonyklivingston on Instagram
  • What’s your web site? www.harmonylivingston.com
  • Twitter-sized bio: Dreamer. Dancer. Playful. Passionate. Introvert. Loyal. Loving. Leo. Nature lover. Puppy parent. Daughter. Sister. Yogi. Friend.
  • What would you be doing if you were not an actor? I’m sure I’d keep busy doing things I love. Being an entrepreneur isn’t always easy, but I really do believe it’s possible to love what you do, and do what you love. For the last several years I’ve been running my own business teaching yoga, creative movement and dance. I love helping people find more freedom and joy within themselves through movement and self-expression.
  • One time you saw greatness play out in front of you: I recently saw Come from Away in New York City, and watching Jenn Colella sing “Me and the Sky” moved me to tears. The song carries you through her character’s life journey. It reminded me that even though we make all these “plans” for ourselves, we have no way of knowing what will happen. The universe has its way, and all we can do is stay present, and practice being grateful for what we have.
  • Bucket-list role: I love playing strong female characters — which is why I adore playing Katherine in Newsies. Mary Poppins is a dream role of mine, and I’m excited to be realizing that dream here at Candlelight opening Sept. 6.
  • Role you were totally miscast for: I played Mary Lennox in The Secret Garden my junior year of college. I didn’t personally feel miscast, and I loved getting to play a precocious 10-year-old girl. But they didn’t cast any kids in the show, and the tech team used oversized sets and cleverly designed the costumes to make us appear to be smaller. I had a blast but in hindsight — that was a bit of a stretch.
  • What are you listening to on Spotify? I’m a big fan of The Wailin’ Jennys and Ryan Adams
  • What’s one simple thing we should be doing to foster the next generation of theatregoers? Make theatre more accessible and inclusive. Tell the stories that haven’t been told and need to be heard.
  • What is Newsies all about? Based on the 1993 Disney film of the same name, Newsies follows a group of young paper hawkers who took on Joseph Pulitzer — and won. The story is inspired by the real-life New York newsboys strike of 1899. The 2012 musical stage adaptation centers on a dreamer named Jack who falls in love with a young reporter (me!), but I am not who I first appear to be.
  • Why does Newsies matter? This show gives me chills every night. Witnessing these boys dance and fight for justice is inspiring. It gives me hope. This story is still relevant more than 100 years later. We have to have the courage to speak our truth, and the willingness to take a stand for ourselves and for each other. In the face of adversity, we must take risks, be vulnerable and persistent, and meet our fear with love and compassion.
  • What do you hope audiences get out of seeing Newsies: Courage. Take a stand for what you believe in, and let your voice be heard.
  • What’s one thing we probably don’t know about you? I’m a first-generation American. My mother is from Spain, and my father is from Canada. I was born in Oregon and grew up in Tennessee. It’s a longer story, for another time.
  • What do you want to get off your chest? Be Present. Listen. Give Love. Laugh more!
