As the fall theatre season begins in earnest, here are 10 intriguing titles to watch, and every Colorado company’s upcoming schedule

September marks the traditional start of the season at theatres throughout Colorado. And while the Denver Center has never been busier with three plays to open the Theatre Company’s 40th season, the coming launch of the Dear Evan Hansen national tour and a new frolic from The Improvised Shakespeare Company in the Garner Galleria Theatre, we devote this space each month in the DCPA NewsCenter to telling you about the wide swath of theatregoing opportunities you have all over the state. After offering up 10 intriguing titles to watch, you will find the list of all September offerings, followed by up-to-the minute roundup of all scheduled upcoming offerings listed by company. You have been informed! Now go to a show. And submit any additions or corrections to the DCPA NewsCenter at jmoore@dcpa.org.

1. The Catamounts’ Men on Boats
As fish stories go, the title is a whopper: Men On Boats is the rollicking, true(ish) story of John Wesley Powell‘s 1869 expedition to chart the Colorado River, and it features a cast with no … um …  men. In fact, the glorious experiment of the play lies in playwright Jaclyn Backhaus’ casting note: “These characters were historically cisgender white males. The cast should be made up entirely of people who are not.” Comic and moving, Men On Boats asks through whose voices will our future history be told? Sept. 22-Oct. 13 at the Dairy Center for the Arts, 2590 Walnut St., Boulder, 303-440-7826, 720-468-0487 or thecatamounts.org

2. Vintage Theatre’s The Kentucky Cycle, Parts 1 and 2
This enormous undertaking is a series of nine short plays by Robert Schenkkan (DCPA Theatre Company’s The Twelve) presented in two parts spanning 1775 to 1975. In telling the story of three intertwined families – one black, one white, and one Native American — Schenkkan examines the American past that created, for better or worse, the country we are today. Generally speaking, Part 1 will be presented at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, with Part 2 at 6:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. (Additional performance dates Oct. 1 and 2). No Friday performances. Vintage will serve dinner between weekend performances for an additional, optional $15 per person. Sept. 7-Oct. 21 at 1468 Dayton St., Aurora, 303-839-1361 or vintagetheatre.com

3. Lowry’s Spotlight Theater’s You Can’t Take it With You
Lowry’s Spotlight Theater closes 20 seasons of entertainment with Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman’s subversive comedy about a family that chooses dreams over drudgery. It’s a poignant way to go out: “As near as I can see, the only thing you can take with you is the love of your friends.” Through Sept. 29 at the John Hand Theatre, 7653 E. First Place, 720-880-8727 or thisisspotlight.com

4. Arvada Center’s Mamma Mia!
Every day, there are at least seven performances of Mamma Mia! staged somewhere in the world. But until now, not one had been staged by a Denver metro theatre company. You know the story: A mother. A daughter. Three possible dads. You know the music: ABBA. This production, directed by Rod Lansberry, marks the very first leading role at the Arvada Center for Denver Center (and Denver) favorite Shannan Steele, who plays Mamma Donna. Sept. 7-30 at 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., 720-898-7200 or arvadacenter.org

5. Athena Project’s Honor Killing
Sarah Bierstock’s drama, which was selected from among 250 scripts to be developed by the Athena Project (which exists to tell stories written by women), tells the suspenseful tale of New York Times reporter Allisyn Davis investigating the “honor killing” of a young Pakistani woman by her own family. The play addresses cultural bias, technology and the limits of ethical reporting. Sept. 8-30 in the Elaine Wolf Theatre at the Mizel arts and Cultural Center, 350 S. Dahlia St., athenaprojectarts.org

6. Miners Alley Playhouse’s Lungs
Lungs  a follows a couple through the surprising lifespan of their relationship as they grapple with questions of family, change, hope, betrayal, happenstance and the kind of pain you can only cause someone you love. Featuring the husband-and-wife acting team of Adrian Egolf and Luke Sorge. Written by Duncan Macmillan. Sept. 7-Oct. 14 at 1224 Washington St., Golden, 303-935-3044 or minersalley.com

7. Curious Theatre’s The Cake
Bekah Brunstetter‘s play tells the story of a New York woman named Jen who wants to get married in her small North Carolina hometown. When she asks her late mother’s best friend to bake the cake, Della is overjoyed to comply — until she realizes this is a wedding with two brides. This play is inspired by — but does not tell the story of — the Colorado-based Masterpiece Cakeshop case that recently went before the Supreme Court. Through Oct. 13 at 1080 Acoma St., 303-623-0524 or curioustheatre.org

8. Benchmark Theatre’s Uncanny Valley
Thomas Gibbons’ play is set in the not-so-distant future where a neuroscientist is teaching androids how to become more human. But the student/teacher lines become blurred with her latest subject, uncovering long-unhealed emotional wounds. Uncanny Valley explores the divide between creator and creation, and how we are redefining what it means to be human. Sept. 14-Oct. 13 at 1560 Teller St., Lakewood, benchmarktheatre.com

9. The Enchantment Society’s Broken Bone Bathtub

Anastasia Davidson. Photo by Michael Ensminger.

Siobhan O’Loughlin’s immersive, one-person play takes place inside a bathtub — in an actual private residence. After a serious bike accident, a young woman musters up the courage to ask for help and shares her story while exploring themes of trauma, suffering, generosity and connection. The audience takes on the role of Siobhan’s friends; listening and sharing their own experiences while also assisting her in her very real ritual of taking a bath. Sept. 6-23 at a secret location in Lakewood. Tickets (and details) at brokenbonebathtub.com

10. Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company’s Pride and Prejudice
If you liked the Arvada Center’s Henry Award-winning Sense and Sensibility (on wheels!), you should enjoy this playful and unconventional updating of Jane Austen’s classic romance, also adapted by Kate Hamill. Sept. 13-Oct. 7 at the Dairy Center for the Arts, 2590 Walnut St., Boulder, 303-440-7826 or boulderensembletheatre.org

NOTE: At the start of each month, the DCPA NewsCenter offers an updated list of upcoming theatre openings, spotlighting work being presented on stages statewide. Companies are encouraged to submit listings and production photos at least two weeks in advance to the DCPA NewsCenter at jmoore@dcpa.org
