Off-Center, the Denver Center’s most unconventional line of programming, is seeking proposals from local artists for a new residency program called Powered By Off-Center. Colorado artists of all disciplines are invited to submit a proposal for some kind of live theatrical performance they would like to develop.
The residency will provide selected artists with pre-production support; access to DCPA equipment and stock scenery; props and costumes; one week of fully staffed tech time in The Jones Theatre, and up to $5,000 to make it all happen.
Off-Center is open to a range of different art forms and artistic experiences, but requires some kind of narrative thread (not necessarily linear or verbal), and it must culminate in a live showing with an audience. Interested parties must submit according to the guidelines outlined below by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12.
“We are excited to offer the local artistic community a new space to play and a platform to experiment,” said Off-Center Curator Charlie Miller. “Our goal is to power your creative ideas, giving you the opportunity and resources to try something new. In March and April 2019, we will pilot this program with two separate residencies. We hope this investment in the local artistic community can help inspire new ideas, build new creative partnerships and support Colorado’s vibrant artistic ecosystem.”
Off-Center hosted a large community conversation on May 8, when artists from around the state representing multiple disciplines were encouraged to offer feedback about the submission process so that it is conducted as fairly and inclusively as possible. More than 90 local artists attended. They eventually broke into small groups and gave the Off-Center staff a wide array of meaningful suggestions.
Powered by Off-Center marks Off-Center’s second open call for submissions this year. Off-Center received 213 short-play submissions from 101 Colorado zip codes for Bite Size: An Evening of Micro Theatre, which will be presented this fall at BookBar.
