Video: 'Page to Stage' highlights with 'Appoggiatura' cast

This month’s noontime Page to Stage conversation on Appoggiatura featured cast members Darrie Lawrence, Julian Remulla and Mehry Eslaminia at the Colfax Tattered Cover Book Store. The actors took questions from DCPA Senior Arts Journalist John Moore and members of the audience about the DCPA Theatre Company’s 24th world premiere play under Producing Artistic Director Kent Thompson.

Remulla and Eslaminia performed musical highlights from the show, including a lyrical demonstration of just what exactly an “Appoggiatura” is. The cast members talk about why live music, and the story’s Venice setting, are indispensable.

Lawrence plays Helen, who has traveled to Venice with her granddaughter and a family friend called Aunt Chuck as they grieve a man they each loved in different ways. Remulla plays Vivaldi and, as one of three on-stage street musicians, provides live violin accompaniment. Eslaminia plays mandolin – an instrument she learned for this production – and a woman named Kate. As time bends and magic beckons around the corner, this favorite from last year’s Colorado New Play Summit by James Still  weaves a quirky and lyrical narrative exploring love, loss and the human soul in its fully staged debut at the Ricketson Theatre.

Join us for our next free Page to Stage conversation at noon Tuesday, Feb. 10, also at the Tattered Cover Book Store, 2526 E. Colfax Ave., when we will be discussing Benediction. Parking is also free.

Page to Stage is part of the DCPA’s CONNECT program, a series of free events designed to enrich your theatre experience and spark a conversation.
