In order to start a family, a childless baker and his wife must break a witch’s spell. They journey into the woods, and along with other fairy tale characters they discover the realities and consequences of life. Winner of 5 Tony Awards.
We think we know how the fairy tales go: Little Red Riding Hood. Cinderella. Rapunzel. Jack and the Beanstalk. Think again.
As a childless baker and his wife try to start a family, they discover a host of fairy tale characters seeking the fulfillment of their own wishes and dreams. Princes and princesses trying to find love; a witch trying to reclaim youth and beauty; and families trying to put food on the table. As they venture deeper into the woods, they discover the realities of life, as well as its consequences.
Winner of 5 Tony Awards including Best Original Score (1988) and Best Revival of A Musical (2002), this Sondheim classic reminds us that life is an unpredictable journey – “to mind, to heed, to find, to think, to teach, to join” – and that no one is alone.
