Spend six weeks working on scenes from plays by contemporary female playwrights! With plays from Sarah Ruhl to Amy Herzog, Annie Baker and many more, actors will be given rich and challenging material to dig into, providing an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of a wide array of some of our greatest voices in theatre! Updated Class Blurb: Seize the opportunity to challenge yourself in this immersive advanced scene study class. Actors will work on three separate scenes, over a six-week period (two weeks per scene). You’ll collaborate with three highly advanced directors and acting instructors, including guest faculty Rick Barbour and Lawrence Hect, in a unique intensive format. Each scene must be fully prepared and memorized at the start of its two-week session. Actors will receive detailed feedback and adjustments from the instructor during week one, then apply those notes and deepen the work in week two. This class challenges you to dig in fully and realize each scene to your highest capacity. All material must be two minutes or less in length.

Whether you have a specific interest in directing or want to learn more about the concepts of directing from an actors’ perspective, this class is for you! Join us as we explore the world of storytelling through audio books, with a particular focus on narration of fiction. Students will explore a wide variety of character voices through techniques including sound placement, tempo and phrasing, accents and vocal textures, and how to protect your voice while doing so! Delve into successful techniques for interpreting text and bringing different genres and characters to life. As one of the fastest growing niches in the voice over world, audio book voice over skills offer even more opportunity for actors.

Learn Standard Scottish, along with its cousin, the Northern Irish dialect. We’ll explore how these two related accents—think Alan Cumming for Scottish and Derry Girls for Northern Irish—share roots yet differ in melody, rhythm, and signature sound changes. Through focused work on resonance, intonation, and articulation, you’ll learn how to keep each dialect distinct and authentic. Tap into the wisdom of the body! The language of movement, physical expression, gesture, and image theatre have the power to bridge our internal and external worlds, amplifying intention and presence in the practice of Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) – the people’s theatre. Originating in Brazil in the seventies, the modalities continue to be full of possibility for promoting introspection and social change. As founder Augusto Boal said, “Theatre is a form of knowledge; it should and can also be a means of transforming society. Theatre can help us build our future…” We will begin with a brief history and introduction to TO, and then ignite our imaginations, playing with the magical and the mundane, exploring a range of techniques using aesthetic space, games, image work, improvisation, movement, and storytelling.

In this three-part workshop, discover tools to activate character and character choices for video games and animation to expand your voice-over range. Every now and then, any creative artist needs a new perspective to shake things up. Actors are no different!  In this workshop, we will investigate the use of visual art and music as a way to explore and enhance physical characterization.  Actors will be provided with creative tools in order to widen and deepen the range of possibilities as they create a character in rehearsal. It is critical to join physical technique and expansive creativity; this class will also focus on sharpening clarity of expression in our physicality and building a discipline of specificity.  Find movement in performance that comes from both an open and free creativity and a focused and dynamic body. In this introductory two-part workshop, participants will explore the core principles of improvisation, including active listening, presence, flexibility, and celebrating the exploration to co-create something unique.
