It can be challenging to find the time and space to write. This generative workshop will be chock full of in-class writing via prompts designed to create characters that are compelling and three dimensional. This will be a deep dive into character and dialogue as well as an investigation into the important role that objects have in defining character. Paired with the writing prompts and exercises will be an examination of the work of modern dramatic writers (eg, Pheobe Waller-Bridge, Donald Glover, John Patrick Shanley, etc.) through analyzing text and watching clips, and discussing what makes their work so memorable.

Continue the journey with Master Instructor Jeremy Chance in this intensive offering to explore Anton Chekhov’s rich and captivating characters in Three Sisters, through the lens of Alexander and Enneatype exploration. Alexander is usually taught as a “body-mind” method to achieve physical ease and awareness, not as a tool to help create a character. In this workshop, Jeremy Chance – an actor himself – will show you how to use postural movement to create a character by using Alexander’s discoveries. Even if you think you know the “Alexander Technique”, you have never experienced it being used in this way. In this workshop, actors will discover:
– Where you are strong in your understanding of characterization (i.e. your type)
– Where you need to develop your understanding and abilities for characterization
– How to find clearer ease of expression through Alexander’s postural discoveries
– How to develop a character by starting with their unique postural signature
– A way of analyzing characters by exploring 9 archetypes in Chekhov’s Three Sisters
– The way Alexander Technique can liberate you physically for characterization

Elevate your craft and ignite your sense of play through this unique blend of movement, language, and organically devised ensemble-based storytelling. In honor of the Spring season, we will dive into the theme of Metamorphosis – using lush, visceral forms of dramatic play and text to explore what it means to truly grow, evolve, and transform. Acting, movement and low-flying trapeze will be active parts of this work; prior trapeze or movement experience is encouraged but not required to be a part of the project. Step into the joy, discovery, and opportunity to get in the sandbox and make something new and beautiful! All levels of experience are welcome!
