At the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA), the name Daniel L. Ritchie is synonymous with generosity, vision, and a deep belief in the transformative power of the arts. While his leadership as Chairman and CEO helped guide the DCPA through economic uncertainty, it was his philanthropic spirit — bold, joyful, and deeply personal — that left a lasting legacy and continues to inspire others to give.
Ritchie, who passed away in 2025 at the age of 93, didn’t just support the DCPA — he embodied it. When he came out of retirement at age 74 to lead the organization through the 2007 global financial crisis, he brought with him a lifetime of experience in business, education, and fundraising. But more importantly, he brought heart. His leadership was grounded in a belief that the arts are essential to a thriving community and that everyone — especially young people — deserves access to live theater.
During his tenure, Ritchie championed programs that expanded the DCPA’s reach far beyond its downtown stages. He was a vocal supporter of initiatives like Shakespeare in the Parking Lot, which brings abridged productions of classic plays to schools and community centers across Colorado. Since its inception, the program has reached more than 115,000 students and families — many experiencing live theater for the first time.
Ritchie’s philanthropy was never passive. He gave not only his resources but also his time, creativity, and even his sense of humor. In 2010, he starred in a rap video — complete with costume jewelry — to promote the DCPA’s blog. Four years later, at age 82, he immersed himself in the world of drag to support the world premiere of The Legend of Georgia McBride. These moments weren’t about spectacle; they were about connection. Ritchie understood that inspiring others to give often meant showing them how much you care.
“Dan was always willing to step out of his comfort zone for the love of the theatre and to make an impact,” said DCPA Immediate Past Chair Hassan Salem. “He led with humility, but also with a sense of fun and fearlessness that inspired everyone around him.”
In 2019, the DCPA established the Daniel L. Ritchie Spotlight Award to honor individuals and organizations that reflect his values. Presented annually at the Saturday Night Alive gala, the award recognizes those who advance the DCPA’s mission through exceptional generosity and advocacy. Past recipients include the Morgridge Family Foundation, whose support of Shakespeare in the Parking Lot has helped the program flourish.
Ritchie’s influence extended beyond the programs he supported. He helped shape a culture of philanthropy at the DCPA — one rooted in joy, accessibility, and community. He believed that giving should be personal and purposeful, and he led by example. Whether attending student matinees, hosting donors, or simply sitting in the audience with children and families, Ritchie was always present, always engaged.
One of his final visits to the DCPA was to a Theatre for Young Audiences performance of Elephant & Piggie’s “We Are in a Play!” Sitting among giggling children, he was visibly moved. “It took his breath away,” recalled DCPA President and CEO Janice Sinden. “He never lost that sense of wonder. He continued throughout his life to seek that out.”
For those considering a gift to the DCPA, Ritchie’s story is a powerful reminder of what philanthropy can achieve. His contributions helped sustain the organization through challenging times, expand its educational outreach, and inspire a new generation of theatergoers. But perhaps most importantly, he showed that giving is not just about writing a check — it’s about showing up, speaking out, and sharing in the joy of the arts.
Today, the DCPA continues to build on Ritchie’s legacy, inviting donors to join in a shared mission: to make world-class theater and arts education accessible to all. Whether through a major gift, a recurring donation, or support for a specific program, every contribution helps bring stories to life and ensures that the magic of live performance continues to inspire.
Dan Ritchie believed in the power of theater to change lives. His legacy proves that one person’s generosity can change an entire community.
