All students pursuing a bachelor of arts (BA) in theatre, film and television complete a total of at least 53 semester hours for the major: 38 semester hours of foundation courses and 15 semester hours of approved electives. Each course must be completed with a C (2.0) or better. At least 24 of the major semester hours must be earned at CU Denver. Students must also follow the College of Arts and Media’s general degree requirements.
Learn how the Japanese system of Reiki can help restore actors and performers to energetic balance, promote calm and help self-regulate anxiety. This workshop will provide an introduction to Reiki’s core principles of presence, deep focus, and body awareness. In addition, we examine how these same core principles also found and rooted in the Stanislavsky System enhance and strengthen your creative path. This class is terrific for all levels and types of performers and performance, including sings, dancers, educators, and public speakers.

Develop your story into screenplay format, either from the seeds of an idea or if you are further along in your journey already! In this class, you will work toward building a first draft of a feature length screenplay or TV pilot. Develop and explore the essentials of a fully realized screenplay, paying attention to the principals of story (character, plot and tone), engagement, and building a working knowledge of how to successfully utilize the visual narrative form. Join in this unique opportunity to explore Viola Spolin’s concept of Direct Experience. Spolin, considered to be the mother of modern improvisation, created activities to strengthen an actor’s ability to stay in the moment. This workshop, using improvisatory play and scene work, will explain and incorporate Spolin’s Five Obstacles to a Direct Experience. Take part in active and engaging activities that will help you hone your skills for giving and receiving information.

Explore two very different European dialects – French and German. While they are off the beaten path of the 5 standard dialects that actors must learn, there are often characters sprinkled throughout plays and films that require these accents. It’s good to have some European dialects in your back pocket! We will discuss the differences between the two dialects, learning the vocal elements of each – the resonance, rhythm, inflection, and sound changes. Because French is a romance language and German is a Germanic language in the same family as English, there will be notable differences. We will work on monologues and scenes from plays, such as Picasso at the Lapin Agile, for French or Cabaret for German. Come away with a solid grasp on both dialects and how to keep them apart!

Most of us can relate to having played a role and wishing we had discovered more specific, confident character choices. This class offers you the chance to do just that! Actors will rework one character and develop a new one using multiple tools – physicality, breath, voice, substitution, visual imagination, text, and more – to strengthen and enliven your characterization toolkit. Actors will focus on two characters: one they bring to class (either one they’ve played before or one they’re eager to explore) and a second one they’ll develop from scratch. This is an opportunity to investigate multiple acting tools at once and increase your actor versatility.
