Build your awareness of context and its importance in the world of the play through partnered scene work. In this 6-week session, actors will explore how environment, style, and circumstances shape behavior and action throughout a scene and play. Working with a partner on two scenes, students will examine how elements like genre, time period, given circumstances, and environment influence their choices. Instructors will provide frameworks for analyzing the broader context of a scene and integrating it into a more fully realized journey. This class will help actors develop adaptability and awareness, allowing them to ground their work in the world of the story while making clear, informed choices.

In the 1970’s, prolific playwright Paula Vogel began her advocacy for more female playwrights to be produced in the American theater. Forty years later that number had only increased by 1%; only the second American female playwright won the Tony Award for Best Play this year. Gratefully, efforts continue to close that gap! Delve into this class where we will explore female playwrights who burst onto the scene as trailblazers during the Roaring Twenties and the Depression, proving over and over that female playwrights could achieve commercial and critical “success”. Sadly, so many of these voices were forgotten; Come explore scene work by these fierce playwrights that forged ahead over every obstacle to be heard in their own voice.

Celebrate this opportunity to dig into one our great American Playwright’s family driven dramas. Deeply ensconced in the world of the “Realism” theatre movement, Miller’s great classics continue to resonate with our lives and circumstances today, in both the realms of family relationship and the challenges of surviving amidst the struggles we are all aware of, day to day. This class will focus specifically on Death of a Salesman (currently celebrating a fantastic revival on Broadway), The Price, All My Sons, and A View from the Bridge as its source material.

Long considered one of the masters of American realism, this Advanced Acting class focuses on the psychology of survival in the plays of Edward Albee. His characters, from Peter and Jerry in Zoo Story to George and Martha in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? to Tobias and Agnes in A Delicate Balance to the Three Tall Women, are all challenges for the committed actor. This class is also a workshop for developing rehearsal techniques for self-directed scenes –no pressure to perform, just explore, expand and discover new ways of working.

In this course, students will immerse themselves in the work of Fitzmaurice Voicework: breath, anatomy of the voice, destructuring, and restructuring. Learn how to relax the body while speaking, so you can access the fullness of your breath and voice to prepare for the athletic use of voice needed for the stage. Take part in a series of exercises to free the body and voice from habitual tension and make connections between thoughts, images, words, and sounds. Often referred to as “Estuary English”, we will focus on the London English that is spoken today. The focus will be a deep dive into understanding the differences between modern London and the more traditional stage dialect of British RP, oft used and heard in the plays of Oscar Wilde, Bernard Shaw and so many others. Both dialects will be valuable assets to an actors toolkit! We will do film and play readings in class, practicing the two dialects in depth. You will learn the articulation sound changes, rhythm, word stress, and resonance differences between each dialect.

From bar room brawls to martial arts melees, the stories told with unarmed stage combat are eclectic, exciting, and energized! Join us for this certification course to learn the essential elements and storytelling skills to safely bring dramatic combat to life!
We’ll concentrate on core concepts – including falling, punching, kicking and contact work – while rehearsing fight sequences and scenes for the stage. Get a taste for this valuable physical acting skill and resumé boost as you build confidence through hands-on work.
We will cover all the basic safeties necessary to perform action as well as the techniques needed to connect the action to the word and deliver a well-acted fight scene. Course will conclude with an adjudication for the Society of American Fight Directors and a certification good for three years.

Build confidence and command the room! This two-session workshop is designed for presenters of all experience levels who want to strengthen their public speaking presence and elevate their speaking skills. Using theatre-based techniques, participants will develop authenticity, vocal strength, composure, and resonance while developing a tool box of techniques to strengthen any presentation. Participants will explore how actors build intention and connection, applying these methods to their own speaking style. The DCPA’s Adult Performance Projects provide a wonderful opportunity to experience and develop an actor’s process in the work. With a lengthy rehearsal process, actors will further develop essential acting tools and strategies including text analysis, objectives and action/tactics, listening and responding, comedic timing, character development, and building authentic relationships on stage. The process will culminate with 3 performances to share their work!

SMALL MOUTH SOUNDS

Bess Wohl’s uniquely engaging contemporary play Small Mouth Sounds engages us in a wonderful way – through lengthy spans of silence. In a very quiet wooded location, six individuals step into the challenge and opportunity of a silent retreat far away from their normal daily lives. From Bess Wohl’s apt description, she offers “As these strangers confront internal demons both profound and absurd, their vows of silence collide with the achingly human need to connect.” There is much to explore in the uncomfortable and ofttimes engaging humor, both verbal and non-verbal. It’s a unique ask for the actors stepping into the work, as words and language are not the primary modes of communication throughout this layered story of connection.

Parfumerie, the beloved souce material for The Shop Around the Corner, You’ve Got Mail, and the musical She Loves Me, is set in a charming European perfume shop in the days leading up to Christmas, where romance, misunderstandings, and hidden identities intertwine. The play explores themes of love, longing, and the balance between professional ambition and personal happiness. We follow the lives of a group of shop employees—particularly two feuding clerks who are, unbeknownst to them, secretly falling in love through anonymous letters—alongside their eccentric coworkers and their employer, whose own troubled marriage adds complexity and depth to the story. Actors will step into a plot full of warmth and wit: the sparring and secret affection of the central couple, the comedic charm of the ensemble, the tension between duty and desire, and the heartfelt journey toward connection.

Updated Class Blurb: Seize the opportunity to challenge yourself in this immersive advanced scene study class. Actors will work on three separate scenes, over a six-week period (two weeks per scene). You’ll collaborate with three highly advanced directors and acting instructors, including guest faculty Rick Barbour and Lawrence Hect, in a unique intensive format. Each scene must be fully prepared and memorized at the start of its two-week session. Students will explore a wide variety of character voices through techniques including sound placement, tempo and phrasing, accents and vocal textures, and how to protect your voice while doing so! Tap into the wisdom of the body! The language of movement, physical expression, gesture, and image theatre have the power to bridge our internal and external worlds, amplifying intention and presence in the practice of Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) – the people’s theatre. Originating in Brazil in the seventies, the modalities continue to be full of possibility for promoting introspection and social change. As founder Augusto Boal said, “Theatre is a form of knowledge; it should and can also be a means of transforming society. Every now and then, any creative artist needs a new perspective to shake things up. Actors are no different!  In this workshop, we will investigate the use of visual art and music as a way to explore and enhance physical characterization.  Actors will be provided with creative tools in order to widen and deepen the range of possibilities as they create a character in rehearsal. It is critical to join physical technique and expansive creativity; this class will also focus on sharpening clarity of expression in our physicality and building a discipline of specificity.  Find movement in performance that comes from both an open and free creativity and a focused and dynamic body.
