Tom Stoppard is arguably one of the finest crafters of language of our living playwrights, if not in the history of playwriting. His work also includes numerious famous screenplays including Shakespare in Love and Empire of the Sun. His ability to find specific nuances, energies and rhythms of character while celebrating the power of language is astounding. He can craft worlds and stories that live in the realm of realism (The Real Thing and Hapgood for example), as well as worlds that have a very heightened sense through the use of non-realistic circumstances (Jumpers, Travesties and more). Join us in our exploration of this playwright’s mastery as a whole, while we mine specific texts and characters in our scene work. (British and other dialect work is not required but will be encouraged to use in our explorations of the text.)

Every actor has a dream role, one they secretly long to play but fear they would never be cast as. Now’s the time. The Classic American Dream Role Project is a six-week intensive advanced acting workshop designed to indulge and realize that dream. There will be two scenes, each with an emphasis on text, context and subtext. Each actor will select a role by a classical American playwright – Odets, Inge, Wilder, Miller, Williams, Albee, Hansberry, Loos or Hellman – and, for one scene, play the primary character of their choice. For their second scene, each actor will play the secondary or supporting role opposite an actor playing their primary choice. The focus throughout is on process, detailed and thorough text analysis, character integrity, research into time and place, and speaking the text in a grounded, highly personalized manner.

Receive feedback and adjustments on a fully rehearsed and prepared scene of your choice from a team of theatre professionals. You’ll be challenged to dig in and realize a scene to your fullest capacity without previous instruction. The material you choose must be 3 minutes or less in length from a published play and fully blocked. Be prepared to receive specific, detailed and direct feedback in the first session. After rehearsing for a week, you’ll bring your scene back for more feedback, work and consideration. Scene partners will be assigned after registration. Have you taken 3 Minute Max before? This is an excellent opportunity to take the class again and explore a new, challenging scene.

Join us to discover the rich and very enjoyable Irish dialect! We will focus on learning the Standard Irish Dialect and sample elements of specific regional versions, particularly with the Dublin region. Emphasis will be on understanding the rhythm, melody, sound changes and resonance of Standard Stage Irish. Various group activities and exercises will help you learn the dialect. Short scenes will also be assigned to help deepen your connection to speaking the dialect from the voices of characters in a play. This can be a helpful tool in preparation for the Fall Performance Project and all future Irish plays you do!

This class will focus on the predominant fighting style of the Renaissance, Rapier and Dagger, a weapon system often employed by Shakespeare (Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and more). R&D is an excellent introduction into swordplay, appropriate both for the beginner and advanced actor combatant. This class will focus on the complexity of swashbuckling with not one but two weapons. We will cover all the basic safety requirements necessary to perform action as well as the techniques needed to connect the action to the word and deliver a well-acted fight scene. Course will conclude with an adjudication for the Society of American Fight Directors and a certification good for three years.

JUNO AND THE PAYCOCK by Sean O’Casey

Juno and the Paycock is the second play of O’Casey’s trilogy set in a Dublin tenement in and around the Irish Civil War. Listed as a “tragedy” by many, it certainly shares a bleak and heartbreaking story of the Boyle family, set in the small and tattered tenement housing of Dublin during this time. But it also offers broad, delightfully comic circumstances from the antics of Captain Jack, patriarch of the family, and his sidekick Joxer, as well as moments of music, dance and celebration. Jack learns of an inheritance has come into that, if true, will dramatically shift the family’s way of life. He delights in this news and runs amok in his antics, which help to lead to their futher downfall. The family i ssteeled together by the will and actions of Juno Boyle, matriarch of this classic Irish family, driven to keep her family together and survive the dire circumstances her family faces in this time. Join us for this rich and captivating Irish classic!

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM by William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare’s “”A MIdsummer Night’s Dream”” is set in the magical world of Athens and its surroudning forest. The play explores themes of love, illusion, and the power of dreams. We follow the adventures of four young Athenian lovers, a group of amateur actors, and the fairy king and queen, Oberon and Titania, whose magical interventions cause confusion and conflict among the mortals. Hone your classical acting skills while stepping into a plot packed full of comedy and mayhem: hot pursuits and quarrels of the lovers, the pandemonium of Titania, the queen of the fairies, falling head over heels in-love with a donkey, the delightful chaos of a group of bad actors rehearsing their play, and the joyous havoc of Oberon and Puck’s love potion mishaps! Shakespeare’s magical workd is unparallelled; it’s his most performed play by people of all ages worldwide.
