Activities to Do: Elephant and Piggie

DCPA Education & Community Engagement presents Elephant & Piggie’s “We Are in a Play!” from October 18-December 22, 2024 in the Weeks Conservatory Theatre. Prepared specially for PreK through third grade audiences, this Theatre for Young Audiences production is based on Mo Willems’ beloved and award-winning children’s books. Dive into a world of make believe, pachydermal peril and swiney suspense with this pre-show activity.

ACTIVITIES TO DO:

Mo Willems has said the Elephant and Piggie books are for kids learning to read. Mo uses simple but expressive illustrations to convey a range of emotions and actions. Elephant Gerald and Piggie are enthusiastic subjects of their play until they discover that their story will end, and they creatively problem-solve so that they have a happy-ending to their tale.

  • Introduce the concept of point-of-view as a story element. Ask them to consider who is telling the story in the musical? What makes the “teller’ important? How would we retell the story from Penguin’s point-of-view? How would the musical end if Penguin was the main storyteller of the musical?
  • Create your own Elephant & Piggie story. Fill in the blanks below and draw pictures to go along with the story when you are done.

One day, Piggie and Elephant went to ___________________________________________.

When they got there, Piggie found ______________________________________________.

Then Elephant found _________________________________________________________.

“Oh, dear!” Elephant cried. “Look at this _________________________________________!”

Piggie said, “Don’t worry, Gerald. Now you can ____________________________________.”

The two friends laughed. Elephant asked, “________________________________________?”

“________________________________________________________________!” said Piggie.
