A mother. A daughter. Three possible dads. And a trip down the aisle you’ll never forget!
For nearly 25 years, people all around the world have fallen in love with the characters, the story, and the music that make MAMMA MIA! the ultimate feel-good show. Now, the much-loved hit musical is back, and Denver will launch the 25th Anniversary North American Tour at the Buell Theatre October 31 through November 5, 2023. The show then continues to play 35+ cities across North America.
“For the past 25 years, MAMMA MIA! has entertained audiences around the world from London to Broadway to regional productions and on the big screen,” said Judy Craymer, Creator& Producer. “We could not be more excited for new and returning audiences to experience MAMMA MIA! this upcoming season.”
Set on a Greek island paradise where the sun always shines, a tale of love, friendship, and identity is beautifully told through the timeless hits of ABBA. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the father she’s never known brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited decades ago. With music & lyrics by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus, MAMMA MIA! is written by Catherine Johnson, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast. The production is designed by Mark Thompson, with lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Andrew Bruce & Bobby Aitken, and musical supervision, additional material & arrangements by Martin Koch.
To date, MAMMA MIA! has been seen in 50 productions in 16 different languages grossing more than $4 billion at the box office. MAMMA MIA! opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway in 2001 where it played for a record breaking 14 years before touring North America in three different productions with the last tour ending in 2017.
Also produced by Craymer, MAMMA MIA! The Movie became the highest grossing live action musical film of all time upon its release in 2008, starring a host of stars including Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Lily James and Cher. A second film, MAMMA MIA! Here We Go Again, opened in July 2018 and is the most successful live musical movie sequel of all time.
MAMMA MIA! joins the list of several Broadway musicals, dating back to 1998, that chose Denver as their launch city.
“It is always an honor to launch Broadway tours in Denver,” says John Ekeberg, Executive Director DCPA Broadway & Cabaret. “It speaks not only to our exceptional staff but also to our supportive audiences that Broadway producers look to downtown Denver as the launch point for their tours.”
