One for the Record Books: 19th Anniversary of Women with Hattitude

The DCPA’s 2024 Women with Hattitude luncheon was the most successful in the event’s history – by a landslide. Tickets were sold out and the event received unprecedented support through sponsorships. Nearly 650 guests were in attendance who raised almost $110,000 by the event’s end.

Women with Hattitude serves as a fundraiser for the Women’s Voices Fund. The DCPA established the Women’s Voices Fund nearly 20 years ago to support and encourage women directors and playwrights. Since the fund’s inception, the Denver Center Theatre Company has produced 39 plays by women (including 18 world premieres), supported the work of 46 female playwrights, and employed 33 female directors.

To kick off the festivities, guests were invited to a welcome reception in the Bonfils Theatre Complex lobby where they could bid in a silent auction, participate in a Wine Pull, and shop Kendra Scott jewelry surprise boxes. The lobby was filled with color and enthusiasm, with guests wearing their best fedoras, fascinators, berets, and sun hats.

Then, the party moved to the Seawell Ballroom for the luncheon. Remarks were made by several essential women in the DCPA community, including Women with Hattitude chair Jennifer Dechtman, DCPA President & CEO Janice Sinden, Executive Director of Education and Community Engagement Allison Watrous, and Executive Director of Equity and Organization Culture Lydia Garcia.

Garcia’s impassioned speech to the full ballroom called for action in the theatre community. In a field dominated largely by men, giving women space to use their voices is invaluable. She quoted Shirley Chisholm, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”

A highlight of the celebration is the annual Parade of Hats. Each table selects a representative in their group to walk the runway. A panel of judges select winners in several categories, including Best in Show. It’s an exuberant end to the event, with women cheering on women as they model their hats and outfits.

The next Women with Hattitude will take place on May 1, 2025. If this year’s event serves as a prediction, you won’t want to wait to purchase tickets and tables for next year.

Apart from attending the Hattitude celebration, individuals are also encouraged to support the Women’s Voices Fund through an annual membership or sponsorship, a new opportunity that was unveiled during this year’s event. More details can be found at denvercenter.org.
