The Improvised Shakespeare Company’s “Ode to Denver”

Five men in white shirts and black knickers are photographed in mid-air while jumping in front of a black background.

In advance of the sixth engagement of The Improvised Shakespeare Company® to visit the Garner Galleria Theatre (May 27-July 26), founder Blain Swen extolled the virtues of our very own Mile High City in “Ode to Denver.” The humor is but a glimpse of what’s in store at this improvisational show that takes suggestions from the audience to create — on the spot — an entirely new Shakespearean masterpiece each night. Come for the “thees” and “thous” and stay for the laughs.

O’ how our souls soar a full mile high,
To return to the blessed city in the sky.
That place where the rushing Cherry Creek flows,
Where we have performed more than 300 shows.
Where once again we do come to play,
In that Garden of the Arts, the DCPA.
But where will we be, when not on the boards?
In so many places that we do adore!
The lark calls for coffee, where shall we go?
Crema! Little Owl! Huckleberry! Novo!
For sweet delights we will eagerly flock,
To LoDough Bakery in the Dairy Block!
Then to the embrace of a cherished lover,
That is, a good book at Tattered Cover!
Not New York, not LA, not Chicago nor Philly
Can satiate our craving for Denver green chile!
And more treats to be had! Swift as we can,
Make haste unto ice cream at Little Man.
O’ Denver, dear Denver, we seek no pardons,
For our long, slow walks in the Botanic Gardens.
More happy memories, what times we shall share,
With lunches and music in Larimer Square!
To sing your praises we just cannot stop.
You make our hearts skip to a fourteener’s top!
Sophia, Rose, Dorothy, and Blanche!
Rockies, Nuggets, Broncos, Avalanche!
O’ Golden Denver! Where shall we go next?
May we have a suggestion? Please give us your rec’s!
You can tell us where to go when you all come here
To laugh and be merry with Improvised Shakespeare!
And thus we hope, very soon to see ya’
Through July 27 at the Garner Galleria!
