A costume sketch for Moulin Rouge! The Musical

Early Arts Education to Broadway: Costume and Set Design for Moulin Rouge! The Musical

Child Classes

At the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA), we provide arts education for children through our year-round acting classes. A signature DCPA summer experience? The Musical Madness, Musical Mayhem, and Musical Mania courses where children create original ten-minute musicals.

These classes have been a longstanding trademark of the DCPA summer sessions since their inception in 1995. Over the course of two weeks, each class creates an original story, new lyrics, fabulous dances and creative costume pieces to produce a band new 10-minute musical. The student-generated and student-centered productions are based in teamwork and artistic collaboration supported by the DCPA team.

On the final Friday, the students will perform their musicals for friends and family in the Wolf Theatre. These performances are a highlight for the participating families and build core skills for the students.

Musical Madness

With the support of the DCPA team, this musical theatre experience is more than just acting. All of our sessions blend the fundamentals of triple threat performing while developing skills like critical thinking, reasoning, language, and teamwork. Through their experiences in theatre, our students come to understand the importance of commitment, cooperation, grit and revisions. “The creativity of the students in our Musical Madness program is beyond inspiring, with their vibrant imagination and heart-filled commitment.” said Executive Director of Education and Community Engagement Allison Watrous, “It truly is the magic of theatre.”

It’s not hard for students to be inspired when taking a class at the DCPA. Professional actors and craftsmen are all around. Just look at the costumes and sets soon to be loading in for the upcoming engagement of Moulin Rouge! The Musical, the Tony Award® winning Broadway production that plays the Buell Theatre June 9-26, 2022

These sketches and renderings are from the Tony Award® winning costume designer, Catherine Zuber, and Tony Award® winning set designer, Derek McLane and show the artistry and technique needed to create such a larger-than-life production.

These elements help establish characters’ personalities and circumstances, they convey context for the production such as time period and location, and support the style and aesthetic of the show. With such a visually dynamic musical, each design element helps to immerse audiences in the story.

If you are inspired by the incredible designs from Moulin Rouge! The Musical, the DCPA’s annual Saturday Night Alive gala is an opportunity to see their work in action while also supporting the future of the arts.

Proceeds from the event support the DCPA’s theatre and education programs by funding scholarships, providing opportunities for children to spark their love for theatre through on-site and in-school workshops like the Musical Madness, Mayhem, and Mania courses, and making theatre accessible for everyone.

Saturday Night Alive will take place on June 25, 2022 in the Seawell Ballroom. Sponsorships, tickets, and tables are on sale now. Guests will attend a cocktail hour, online auction, and dinner before enjoying a performance of Moulin Rouge! The Musical in the Buell Theatre from the best seats in the house.
