Mentorship Matters: Youth Programs Strengthening the Metro Denver Community

Highlights include: 1 in 5 adults experience a mental illness each year; more than 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience a serious mental illness; 312,000 Colorado adults have a serious mental illness; 1 in 20 adults have serious thoughts of suicide each year; 266,000 Colorado adults have serious thoughts of suicide; and 1,293 lives were lost to suicide in Colorado in 2022. Also notes that 1,186,000 adults in Colorado have a mental health condition. For youth, 1 in 6 adolescents aged 12–17 experience a major depressive episode; 103,000 Colorado adolescents experience one each year; 1 in 9 adolescents have serious thoughts of suicide; and 63,000 Colorado adolescents experience serious thoughts of suicide. Additionally, 19% of youth aged 0–17 have experienced two or more adverse childhood experiences linked to mental illness and substance misuse.
